The Figurative Poetry of Gaya Lastovjak

Gaya Lastovjak’s presence in such distinguished company serves as a clear signal that her work is recognized and appreciated on an international scale. Hope, optimism, shame, transformation, freedom, love, eroticism, beauty, helplessness, anxiety: those are just some of the aspects of human existence that the polish artist Gaya Lastovjak draws attention to in her three-dimensional paintings, using her signature mixed technique of papier-mâché, canvas and oil paint. Gaya’s artistic language is the one of emotional senses, a graceful expression of an universal human experience. Just as the “chewed paper” or papier-mâché is bound by an adhesive paste, Gaya’s personal expression is inseparable from the surrounding reality. The painting “Trapped’ for example, refers to the period of strict isolation. The visible metal construction along with the static form show an internal tear and uncertainty about the future. Hands surrounding the figure represent hope, a perpetual struggle against fate.

Although many would argue on the fact that we can make a categorization of “feminine art”, I would, in the spirit of the American sociologist Nancy Chodorow, like to “go against the current flow”, and claim that we can still define aspects of “feminine” in art, that are intrinsically gender related. By “feminine” I refer to a specific way of symbolic interpretation of the material world, that is both soft and powerful. There is possibly no better way to express this dichotomy than the use of paper mâché, because, in spite of it’s hardness, “life is fragile as a paper”, as per a Chinese saying. The paintings of Gaya Lastovjak are quiet whispers of deep realities, where the refined brightness of paint reduces the heaviness of the human condition, expressed by the frozen poses of her characters. They are essentially a critical language of non-violence. The firmness of her message, reflected in the fragile elegance of the overall composition shows a particular sort of aesthetics that goes beyond any type of standard classification.

With the desire to induce a dialogue between the viewer and her artistic work, we can say that Gaya’s artistic expression has already gained recognizable attention: she is an award-winning artist, whose works have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Italy, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Monaco among others. In addition, her art is featured in art books or publications such as Photographize Arts Culture Magazine. One of her paintings has been featured on the cover of the art and poetry magazine Woven Tale Press (New York) and this year the work of Gaya Lastovjak will be exposed in the in the 14th Art Biennale in Florence.

W połowie stycznia 2023 roku na francuskiej platformie poświęconej kulturze i estetyce – "Paris the other Way" – ukazał się obszerny artykuł przybliżający wyjątkową twórczość Gayi Lastovjak. Blog ten, prowadzony z niezwykłą dbałością o merytorykę, zyskał renomę miejsca, które nie tylko dokumentuje świat sztuki, ale aktywnie kreuje dialog między twórcami a odbiorcami, prezentując starannie wyselekcjonowane sylwetki artystów z całego świata.

Publikacja ta postawiła polską artystkę w rzędzie wybitnych osobowości współczesnej sceny artystycznej. W tym samym czasie na łamach serwisu gościli tacy twórcy jak amerykański wizjoner Daniel Bruce Monroe, francuski artysta Etienne Assenat czy uznana grecka rzeźbiarka Vasso Fragkou. Obecność Gayi Lastovjak w tak doborowym towarzystwie jest jasnym sygnałem, że jej prace są dostrzegane i doceniane na arenie międzynarodowej.

Autorka tekstów, Ana Malnar, wypracowała unikalny styl narracji, który cieszy się ogromnym uznaniem czytelników. Zainteresowanie Anny Malnar tą unikalną, strukturalną formą wyrazu stanowi potwierdzenie innowacyjności prac Lastovjak, które wychodząc poza ramy tradycyjnego płótna, idealnie wpisują się w nowoczesne poszukiwania artystyczne promowane przez paryską platformę.

Nadzieja, optymizm, wstyd, przemiana, wolność, miłość, erotyzm, piękno, bezradność, lęk: to tylko niektóre z aspektów ludzkiego istnienia, na które polska artystka Gaya Lastovjak zwraca uwagę w swoich trójwymiarowych obrazach, tworzonych w autorskiej technice łączącej papier-mâché, płótno i farbę olejną. Język artystyczny Gayi to język zmysłów i emocji – subtelny wyraz uniwersalnego ludzkiego doświadczenia. Tak jak „przeżuty papier” (papier-mâché) jest spajany masą wiążącą, tak osobista ekspresja artystki jest nierozerwalnie związana z otaczającą ją rzeczywistością. Na przykład obraz „Uwięziona” (Trapped) odnosi się do okresu ścisłej izolacji. Widoczna metalowa konstrukcja wraz ze statyczną formą ukazują wewnętrzne rozbicie i niepewność co do jutra. Dłonie otaczające postać reprezentują nadzieję – nieustanną walkę z losem.

Choć wielu mogłoby polemizować z sensem kategoryzowania „sztuki kobiecej”, chciałabym – w duchu amerykańskiej socjolożki Nancy Chodorow – pójść „pod prąd” i stwierdzić, że wciąż możemy definiować aspekty kobiecości w sztuce, które są nierozerwalnie związane z płcią. Pod pojęciem „kobiecości” rozumiem specyficzny sposób symbolicznej interpretacji świata materialnego, który jest jednocześnie delikatny i pełen mocy. Prawdopodobnie nie ma lepszego sposobu na wyrażenie tej dychotomii niż użycie papier-mâché, ponieważ – mimo swojej twardości – „życie jest kruche jak papier”, jak głosi chińskie przysłowie. Obrazy Gayi Lastovjak są cichym szeptem o głębokiej rzeczywistości, gdzie wyrafinowany blask farby łagodzi ciężar ludzkiej kondycji, wyrażony przez zastygłe pozy jej postaci. Ich przekaz jest w swej istocie krytycznym językiem non-violence (bez przemocy). Stanowczość jej komunikatu, odzwierciedlona w kruchej elegancji całej kompozycji, ukazuje szczególny rodzaj estetyki, który wykracza poza standardowe klasyfikacje.

Z pragnienia wywołania dialogu między widzem a dziełem sztuki narodziła się twórczość, która zyskała już wyraźne uznanie: Gaya jest wielokrotnie nagradzaną artystką, której prace wystawiane były w Polsce, a także m.in. we Włoszech, Austrii, Hiszpanii, Portugalii i Monako. Ponadto jej sztuka pojawia się w albumach i publikacjach, takich jak Photographize Arts Culture Magazine. Jeden z jej obrazów trafił na okładkę nowojorskiego magazynu o sztuce i poezji The Woven Tale Press, a w tym roku prace Gayi Lastovjak zostaną zaprezentowane podczas 14. Biennale Sztuki we Florencji.
